CV
Professor Hayashi started his research career in 1979 as assistant professor at University of Tokyo with building an urban land use - transport model named CALUTAS, one of the ISGLUTI (International Study Group on Land Use - Transport Interaction) models, which was to assess metropolitan-wide impacts of the 15km long Tokyo Bay Bridge. He has also built models to assess the impacts of Shinkansen High Speed Rail in terms of economy as well as life cycle CO2 emissions. His research has also featured “Smart Shrink” of cities to maximize the inhabitants’ quality of life while to minimize carbon emissions and maintenance cost of built-up areas when they are aged and the economy is matured.
In WCTRS (World Conference on Transport Research Society), he has been the chair of SIG (Special Interest Group) on “Transport and Spatial Development” since 1989, the chair of SIG on “Transport and the Environment” since 2001 and the chair of Scientific Committee for whole research areas since 2007.
His leadership in international projects includes member of OECD EST(Environmentally Sustainable Transport), JICA project Chairs of transport - land use master plan studies for Bangkok and Hanoi, and Chair of CUTE (International Cooperative study on Urban Transport and the Environment), which has been awarded three prizes and published from Elsevier in 2004. He has conducted international research projects on crucial problems of transport in developing countries, particularly on the mechanisms of urbanization and motorization and their negative feedbacks and the countermeasures.
He has served as Editor of "Transport Policy", Elsevier as well as Associate Editors of "Transportation Research (D: Environment)", Elsevier and "Papers in Regional Science", Wiley and Blackwell. He has been Visiting Professors at University of Leeds (UK), University of Dortmund (Germany), Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji University (China) and Global Asia Institute of National University of Singapore, and also Advisor to ITF (International Transport Forum).
